Memorial Day & Flag Day- A Retrospective

Here in the United States, we celebrate Memorial Day on the last Monday in the month of May.

Encyclopedia.com defines Memorial Day as…

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition | 2008 | Copyright

“Memorial Day holiday in the United States observed in late May. Previously designated Decoration Day, it was inaugurated in 1868 by Gen. John A. Logan for the purpose of decorating the graves of Civil War veterans and has since become a day on which all war dead are commemorated.”

Flag Day

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition | 2008 | Copyright

“Flag Day anniversary of the adoption of the American flag in 1777. It is celebrated on June 14 but is not a legal holiday.”

[ed. note]

Memorial Day also typically signifies the start of Summer.

As Flag Day is not a legal holiday, it is good to remember the history behind the creation of “Old Glory”, i.e. Betsy Ross, etc.
